Mr. Lee

Being a “real” teacher

“How can my life influence my students?” is always a question I ask myself in my teaching. The role of teacher is very significant not only because a teacher can teach our students knowledge or motivate them in learning. On top of that, it is important because a teacher is a model who shows the students how to be a better person in society.

Students will face different problems and barriers in their studies from Primary one to Secondary six. One of the major problems of Hong Kong students may face is the learning of English. They always think that learning English is a chore and I share the same feeling, too. However, one of my secondary English teachers changed my thoughts. He showed me that learning English could be fun if you learn it through your daily life. As a result, I choose to study English as my major subject in the university. The four-year English study in the Institute and the teaching in the secondary school have supported my belief. I find that teaching English is not simply teaching grammar or drilling student’s to do grammar exercises. The most important thing is how to motivate students to learn English through their daily life. What we see, what we meet, what we hear at home, on the streets, or even in supermarkets and restaurant will be a good source to teach English. I believe that motivating students to learn English through something they are familiar with or interested in is a key to learn English effectively.

Besides, being a group leader in my church for years has given me plenty of chances to build up a good relationship with different adolescents. This experience supports my belief that having a good rapport between teacher and student is also important in my future career. I believe that a good relationship is one of the basic elements in teaching.

As a teacher, I think that we are a role model for our students to learn and follow, teacher’s teaching attitude or even just a little advice or reminder for them will significantly affect a students’ life. After years of learning and teaching in the school, I have been equipped to be a better teacher. Although I can foresee there are problems and challenges in front of me, I still stand the same that to be a teacher is a goal of mine.

May God be with you always
